Maria Gini
Professor Gini has been a leader in the field of robotics and multi-agent systems for over 25 years. She has made seminal contributions in the area of robot programming for manipulators and for small robots and in the area of economic agents. Her research overlaps both AI and robot programming.
Her work spans many areas but has a common theme of enabling simple robots to operate reliably in unstructured environments. Her work focuses on using robots and measuring their performance.
In an era where adding hardware and making robots more powerful is the dominating trend, she looks for minimalistic ways of doing things, knowing that simple solutions are often more robust. She looks for simple solutions, always trying to find out if something can be done more easily with simple and cheap robots.
Professor Gini has a special passion for working with undergraduates and children, especially women, to share her excitement about her field. She has developed initiatives to attract, recruit, and mentor women at all levels, from grade school to high school to faculty. She has used a variety of robots, from LEGO-based robots to commercial platforms, for numerous education and outreach activities to increase girls interest in science.
